Deputizing the President of Yarmouk University, the Vice President for Planning, Development, Scientific Research, and Quality Affairs, Dr. Samer Samarah, sponsored the activities of the symposium "Refugees and Human Rights: The Right to Education", which was organized -on the occasion of the Human Rights Day- by Yarmouk’s Center of Refugees, Displaced Persons, and Forced Migration Studies in cooperation with the ALECSO Chair for Asylum, Displacement, and Forced Migration.
The Director of the Center, Dr. Reem Al-Kharouf, delivered a speech indicating that the symposium celebrates the occasion of the Human Rights Day and that its topic complies with the strategic plan of the Center. She then emphasized that the Center is one of the scientific institutes established by Yarmouk University to study and highlight the challenges and problems encountering the Jordanian youth and refugees in terms of education and other fields.
Benjamin Schmalij of the German Agency for Academic Exchange Service DAAD talked about the role of the DAAD in the Jordanian educational sector, the training opportunities and scholarships it provides to Jordanian and refugee students in various disciplines and scientific fields, and the support provided by the organization to researchers to implement scientific projects and research studies and attend German language programs. He also called on university students and faculty members to review all information about the various training and education programs offered by the organization on its the official website and to get involved in its projects.
Lara Nassar from the regional office of Nuffic's office in Jordan talked about Nuffic's endeavor to transfer educational expertise from the Netherlands to Jordan, highlighting that Nuffic offers many programs that target students and graduates by offering training programs to enhance individuals’ basic skills in a way that bridges the gap between education and the labor market requirements. She also pointed out that Nuffic is in charge of networking tasks between the educational institutions of the Netherlands and those in Jordan within the Erasmus+ program.
In return, Tamara Bakis, from the Learning Department of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), explained that education is one of the pillars of protecting the future of refugees, pointing out that Jordan hosts 12% of the number of refugees in the world. She also stressed the need to offer vocational training programs to enable young people to engage in the labor market.
